Do I cut the branches on a two year old apricot tree? The tree gives lots of apricots but is really untidy?

Apricots can be pruned in the fall, in the spring, or when you perceive a problem. Any limbs that are facing inward you should remove to the main branch, but untidy branches - only remove 1/3 of the branch if possible (to assure a good crop next year). It is not really necessary to paint or put wound paint on if your tree is healthy and you are not experiencing a lot of rain or moisture. I've done this for years with all the stone fruit trees in my orchard with no significant consequences. Good luck with your project!

You can prune the limbs after the sap gos down. Cut out

all the limbs that cross each other. that rub and are too

low to mow under. Of coarse it will reduce your apricot

harvest. Paint all the cuts with a good pruning dope to

keep out insects. Don't over do it the first year.

Good luck.
Reply:Sure. Pruning has its purposes: removing injured or dead parts, improving production, and developing a specific shape. It is best to wait until the tree is dormant for heavy pruning, but if there is a real problem right now, minor trimming shouldn't be an issue.
