What is the relationship (biologically) between apricots and almonds?

I always thought apricots and almonds were two totally different species.

But I recently learned that inside of every apricot, if you break open the pit, is a small almond. It looks like an almond, it tastes like an almond.

And I have heard that almond extract and essential oils are obtained from apricots.

What is the connection between apricots and almonds? Are they different species? How closely are they related? Why are there almonds inside apricots?

What is the relationship (biologically) between apricots and almonds?
They are in the same genus, Prunus. It's a very diverse genus which also contains:

PLUMS - Prunus domestica

DAMSONS - Prunus domestica var.

SLOES - Prunus spinosa

CHERRIES - Prunus avium / Prunus cerasus

PEACHES - Prunus persica

NECTARINES - Prunus persica var.

Further, Prunus is in the family, Rosacea, which includes fruits as diverse as apples and strawberries!

Have you seen a fresh almond, straight from the tree? It is enclosed in a furry green fruit, a bit like a small green peach.
Reply:The relationship between the Apricot and the Almond is seed and feed. The Almond feeds off the meet of the fruit. It is the fruit of the tainted tree (sorta speak).
Reply:the apricots are not the same like almond. the inside of the seed of apricot is not edible, it is poisonous. as someone aelse already stated, both of the trees mentioned by you are members of the Prunus family.

btw the content of the seed is always the same, you will find the perfectlu same structure in the wallnut, peas, etc. it is the embryo or offspring of a new plant. there is a bunch of plants that have this in common they are called Rosopsida+Magnoliopsida
