Why is a dried apricot called a dried apricot but a dried plum is called a prune?

Hey there Fallon!! Well 2 answer your ? I went to sunsweet.com %26amp; funny thing is that the new container that holds their product makes 2 statements. On the label top closest to the lid it states PITTED DRIED PLUMS while @ the bottom it reads SUPER SELECT CALIFORNIA PRUNES. Reading this U might guess their marketing dept thinks by stating it 2 different ways people will just select the name they prefer. Check it out for yourself!! Goto the site %26amp; click on products then the prune tab on the left then on a prune product scroll to the bottom 'til U c all All about prunes this is what is says: When Is A Plum a Prune?

Botanically speaking, a prune is a plum, but not all plums can become prunes. A fresh plum variety, known as the prune-plum, is one of the few plum varieties that can be dried without severe fermentation. Technically, only dried plums are called prunes, though the term is commonly applied to fresh plums that can be dried successfully.

I hope that this put's proper plum/prune usage to rest. :)

You ever heard of marketing.

The medical profession pushed prunes for regularity.

To call them 'dried purnes' would INFER you can do this at home.
Reply:I don't know but dried grapes are raisins!
Reply:Nowadays, dried plums are called dried plums for marketing purposes: to sell them to younger consumers who think that prunes are only for Grandma and Granddad.
