What are good colors to make a small room look bigger and brighter?

I'm painting my room and im planning on having a white ceiling with one white wall facing the windows. The rest of the walls will be a light apricot color. I want my small room to appear bigger and brighter (the two windows are small too). Oh and I also dont want it to look plain . Any suggestions?

What are good colors to make a small room look bigger and brighter?
I think I would paint all four walls. If the room is small, one wall a different color is going to make the space look choppy. Apricot is nice. I would also suggest a pale yellow or tan, glass blue, or a soft shade of barely green. Honestly, any light color is going to make the room feel bigger. I would also suggest hanging soft drapes from the ceiling to the floor, to create the illusion of larger windows. Go beyond the actual window in width, so the illusion is you have larger windows. But go with something soft and airy...like a faux silk or gauze...to give the room breath. IKEA has some really fun, really cheap drapes that would look awesome, I am sure. Hang artwork about midway down the walls to create the illusion of a taller ceiling. In other words, don't hang your pictures too high!! That will also make your room seem larger. And avoid area rugs on the floors, as this also chops up the visuals of the room.

Good luck!! Hope this helps!!

FYI - The colors I suggested are INSTEAD of the apricot, not to coordinate with the apricot!! Sorry if I misunderstood.
Reply:I saw this channel on TV and they said to do it light colors and then just access the room with bright colors...bed comforter, or rugs and pictures...
Reply:I used to believe white or light colors made a room look bigger, but this spring I painted my family room. It was very light, just a hint of color, believe the old paint was called 'peach white'. Needed repainting and I wanted a warmer cozier look so picked a medium toned camel/taupe called 'praire dust'.

I had no goals to make the room look smaller or bigger, but it really does makes the room look bigger, several people have said so. I especially noticed it when I only had two walls done. The almost white walls were like 'in your face', making them seem closer. The darker walls seem to fade into the distance. Hard to explain, but was very noticable difference.

I think very dark walls might make a room feel closed in, like a cave, and therefore look smaller, but I wonder if is really medium-toned walls (not light and not dark) that make a room look bigger. It could also be that my new color might be concidered more muted, as opposed to brightness that would 'pop' and make the walls seem closer.

Having accessories around the room that brighten it up might make the eye move around more, possibly making the room feel bigger. This is just a theory I'm making up, but it's kind of working for me - not drawing the eye to the walls themselves makes you not as aware that the are 'right there' in a small room.

But whatever! It's only paint! Doesn't cost that much to try what you want. Have fun
Reply:I would pick a bright or a neutral color, Then, paint the walls AND the ceiling the same color. That makes a room look bigger than its actual size. Add in some mirrors and that will also make it appear larger.

Good luck!

hope it helps!
Reply:1] white lace or eyelet curtains

2] mirror on wall across from windows - find a white framed one, and sponge paint or design in apricot and accessory color

3] white or cream or light beige rug/carpet

4] add an accent color from bedding, or - terracotta, sage or hunter green, teal

5] pick a single color and material to frame all art [ and maybe mirror ] - brass/chrome, oak/walnut, colored enamel

6] use bedding colors for throw pillows, reading chair, lamps,

vase or flowerpot, candles and holders, and ornaments

7] make a floral swag for area over mirror - use wall color, and accessory colors

8] store all items possible - underbedstorage, closet shelf dividers, shoe racks, desk accessories in drawers or trays,

makeup in cosmetic caddy.

Keep surfaces neat - desk, dresser, bed; and floor picked up.
