St. Ives Invigorating Apricot Scrub for everyday use?

A friend gave me this St. Ives Invigorating Apricot Scrub and I've been using it for two days now, morning and evening. Is it harmful to use it 2x a day though I'm just scrubbing it on my face very gently? Besides, I don't have any alternative face soap to use. I'm not really sure 'bout my skin type but I think I have oily skin. I also don't have any pimples but my face isn't that really smooth. What should be the frequency of use on that product? Is there also anyone who uses it 2x a day? Please give me insights about this product, it's my first time to use St. Ives.

As long as you don't have pimples, I think using it 2x a day is fine. However, I wouldn't do it more frequently than this, because too much irritation is bad for your skin no matter what. If you did have pimples, I'd caution that the scrubbing can irritate them further, causing more of a breakout. Scrubs are good for smoothing out the face, as long as you're gentle - which you've said you are, so that's another plus for you!

St. Ives is a great, cheap, effective product that is pretty much idiot-proof, so you don't need to worry about using it the wrong way besides scrubbing too hard or too frequently, as I already mentioned.

The only other thing I'd say is that physical scrubs like this one only get you so far in your goal toward smoothness. If you really want to improve the texture of your skin, I'd switch to an AHA product at some point, as it is a chemical exfoliant that exfoliates more than just the very surface layer of your skin. It shouldn't be used in concentrations of more than 10%, no matter what the cosmetic companies tell you. Also, the product needs to have a pH of 3 to 4, otherwise the AHA may be in there, but it won't actually do anything. A good one that meets these qualifications is Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Face Lotion, Night (8% AHA). Also, Paula Begoun at www.cosmeticscop.com has great skin-care products, with several pH-correct chemical exfoliants.

Hope this helps!
Reply:Hi hun, i use the same scrub as u, but u shouldnt use it twice a day, as its extremely bad 4 ur skin. U should only be using it once a week like i do. Its purpose is to whisk off dead skin cells, but as ur cells haent had time to die, u are whisking off the live ones, and thats bad. Use St.Ives facial wash, ad use the scrub once a week. Ur skin will get burnt more easily in the sun, as it doesnt have enough dead layers to protect itself.
Reply:my dear, you only exfoliate with st. ives scrub ONCE a week..

dead skin cells removed allows new skin to resurface and if you scrub too often, you'll be literally scraping off the fresh skin too.. so once a week is safer and more 'skin-friendly'. :-)
Reply:I used to use it once a day, I have combination skin, some parts get more oily while other areas dry out easily. You want to be careful with this scrub because the exfoliants are rough and if you scrub too hard it can damage your skin. Since you have oily skin, it probably won't dry out your skin using it twice a day. The point of exfoliating is to remove the excess dead skin layers that make your skin look dull, therefore softening, smoothing and clearing up your complexion! So this should help you out, I really liked this product when I used it, but like I said, keep scrubbing GENTLY and you should be fine! If you feel like using it once per night does the trick, then just rinse your face with warm water in the morning!

**HAHA, that's funny that she gave me a thumbs down. I used it every day and it never damaged my skin. I already pointed out that the exfoliants which are ground walnut shells, are rough, but as long as you don't SCRUB but massage gently, like you said you did, you should be fine. It doesn't seem like you have sensitive skin so it's not a BAD thing to use this product every day. Just as long as you aren't scrubbing for a long time, it's fine. Your skin cells die every day so it's not like you are doing something terrible by using it daily. Most people exfoliate once to a few times a week, but if you have nothing else to use, it's fine.

I know you didn't, I was referring to the person below me! %26lt;3
Reply:Hi there!

I use that as part of my routine, but not twice a day! The actual scrubbers are tiny bits of shell that if used that much,

can scratch the skin!! You don't need that much toning...you need to give your skin a rest now - First, Apply a gentle non-soap product (even Goat's milk bar) or Clinique or some kind of gentle wash...Then use a toner to get rid of the excess

dirt and sebum (oil that causes acne) a liquid toner...for daily use.

Once or twice a WEEK I then scrub my face with it, to get rid of the dead skin cells. That's it.

Go and get some gentle, soap and moisturizer...(light) - and follow my instructions! You're just scraping your face, at that rate, trust me!!

AND - You're scraping/scrubbing away essential oils and skin cells that we all need...You're not giving your cells a 'chance' to turn over, a natural process...
