How is the best way to get rid of tear stains on a dog?

i have a mini poodle, apricot in color, soon to be three and as long as we have had her, she gets crusties and tear stains under her eyes...the stains dont bother me as much but i have trouble getting the crusties out of her hair...besides cutting them out (i get nervous using scissors that close to her eyes) is there anyway to easily remove them? and also is there anyway to prevent them?

How is the best way to get rid of tear stains on a dog?
Unscented Pampaers baby wipes will get rid of the stains, and soften the crusties so you can comb them out. Wipe under her eyes morning and evening with Pampers baby wipes
Reply:Baby wipes used daily are gentle and will prevent the crusties.
Reply:Unless you're showing the dog, do not use the products they sell for tear stains. Most of those products can irratate or sting your dogs eyes. The most harmless way for your dog would be just using a soft wash rag and water and wash the area daily.

My parents have a 15 year old Lhasa Apso and they do n ot wash his eyes or face daily and he developed an eye infection. I had been telling my parents for years to just wash his face and eyes with a wash rag and water and lo and behold the vet told them the same exact thing.

Don't waste your money on the expensive tear stain remover, just try water and a nice soft rag and it'll work.
Reply:1.You can switch her water to something bottled (spring water or purified drinking water) the chemicals in tap water contribute to tear staining in lots of dogs.

2. Get a men's beard trimmer. Very carefully, avoiding the eye rim, trim out the crusties going from the eye toward the nose. (if you are nervous about using something on her face, ask your groomer to show you how to safely trim in front of her eyes)

3. Get a produce called "Eye Envy" http://www.eyeenvy.com/ You have to use it every day, but if you do, it works
Reply:there is a special lotion to get rid of tear stains easily.

just go down to the nearest pet store and ask the staff for tear stain remover lotion.
Reply:they make a stain remover for tear removal and it does work if yoiu use it daily but you miss one day and the stains ae back ive been a groomer for 13 yrs and have found nothing that works permanatly
Reply:In sainsburys tey got eye and ea wipes they wrked for me
Reply:The best, easiest, and cheapest way to get rid of the eye crustys is just a plain wet (with water) paper towel, it will soften them so you can wipe them off.
Reply:there is a tear remover you can buy from your local pet store it is about $10 hope that helps you
Reply:Just use wipes.. Or just give her a bath..=)
