Something is eating the bark off my Apricot trees?
You don't specify at what height the bark is being eaten. If it is close to the ground it is possibly rabbits, porcupine, or beaver. If the height is higher it is likely deer, or squirrels; they will also eat any twigs they can get to. There are many animals that occasionally eat bark in winter.
However, I do not advise poisoning the wildlife. Plus, you are just as likely to poison an animal that is not responsible for the tree damage. Buy a roll of stiff fencing high enough and tight enough to keep the wildlife away from your trees' trunks. It takes 9.5 feet to make a 3 foot diameter circle. Tie the two ends together around the tree.
Reply:Squirrels or mice most likely. Had a problem similar with a Mulberry.
I was actually able to witness the mice chewing on the bark.
My son eradicated them with his pellet gun.
Tree has since healed.
Reply:If it is close to the ground, it is probably rats or rabbits. If it is higher up, about 4-5' off the ground, it is most likely deer. You can get a spray repellent at a garden center, it will help keep them away (it tastes really nasty to the animal. You can also get tree guards to keep this from happening.
Reply:That sounds really weird. Sorry i'm no help, I just don't know.
Reply:It could either be a rabbit , a rat, or even a squirrel. They will eat on the bark when no other food is available. Set out some rat bait poison...they will eat it instead of bark....then go off and die.
I have seen the rabbits eatting the bark of my newly planted tree...and I have also seen some large rats eat bark of my neighbors tree.
