I have two chinchillas, I feed them everyday with nutritional pellets, Timothy Hay, and Alfalfa. Every night after I have given them a cuddle and put them back in their cage they get to choose a couple of pieces of dried fruit, digestive biscuit, dried cactus or cornflakes from their treat box. The dried fruit which was in their raisins, blueberries, cherries and cranberries got used. So I asked my husband to get some more dried fruit mixed berries, or raisins. The only packet he could find was mixed fruit which included raisins, dried papaya, dried apricot and dried pineapple. I have in the past given them dried apple and banana chips, but I dont know if the apricot, papaya and pineapple will upset their stomach, or poison them (as I know that some foods can).
Is it safe for a chinchilla to eat dried papaya, apricot and pineapple?
I give mine dried papaya and pineapple all the time, in moderation of course.
However, I would steer clear of the raisins... they've been shown to cause liver failure in dogs. It may or may not be an issue with chinchillas, but just in case I do not feed any of my pets raisins.
Rose hips are another good treat for chins.
Reply:All fruits have way too much sugar....my guys get shredded wheat, whcih is the best thing to give them and it it good for their digestive systems...
Once in a while, I will give them a rose hip or a half of a fruit loop!!
Love my guys---they ARE SPOILED!!
Reply:Best to stay away from sugary treats. Try giving apple sticks or cheerios or oats (not the quick cook). They are beneficial on top of your chinchilla thinking they are a treat.
Reply:yes, dried papaya, apricot and pineapple is fine but in small doses. Once a week at very most. Dried banana chips are fine but very fattening.
They shouldn't have blueberries or cherries (dried or not)
