I'm making my 6 1/2 month old's purees (mostly organic). I was wondering if I can give him these fruits: Mango, apricot and prunes. And will any of these constipate him or give him the runs?
Can I give my six month old mango, apricot or prune purees?
Hi. I have giving these fruits to my baby since she was 5months old because my ped saud it was ok. Apricot makes hard stools and prunes and mango makes them a little softer. I just alternate so my girl doesn't get constipated or runny..My baby girl loves mango the most! (I think it is because is sweet)
Reply:Mango, apricot, and prunes are totally fine for babies.
They should not constipate him, though they may make him fart a lot. If he is constipated, I'd give him prunes for sure to get him going. As you introduce these new foods, just watch him carefully over a few days to be sure he's processing the fruits and not having a reaction.
Digesting foods is something new for them too, so his bowel movements may change from what you're accustomed to, just take note and call the doctor if the baby seems in distress.
I stewed dried apricots on low heat for about 30-45 minutes to get them really soft and then I put them through the baby food mill. I retain the liquid to mix in once the batch is all pureed so that the consistency is thinner. I do this same process for prunes.
Sometimes I mix cubed mango in the batch or I mix apricots and prunes together and have everything stew together. You can also mix the purees with banana or into plain full-fat yogurt. The mix-ins are endless!
Reply:I gave my daughter all kinds of purees that I prepared for her when she was that age.. actually I started when she was about two months old. She never got constipated, but with prunes, she pooped more than normal.. not diarrhea though. You can try it out, every baby works differently. If you go to the doctor, they might say no. Some doctors are strict and they'll tell you to only give them baby cereal and mild things like that. But I think babies deserve to eat what we eat, and in the end... in my opinion... it pays off. My daughter is now one and a half and she eats EVERYTHING from broccoli, to asparagus, to cauliflower... anything! So try it out.. just make tiny amounts first.
Reply:They should be ok. The prunes could give him the runs if you let him eat too much. Just make sure you introduce new foods a little at a time, or mix them with something that you know he tolerates well.
Reply:Prunes are nature's laxatives. You can still give them a shot, but do it in moderation. I just took a vacation with my husband and six month old daughter and my daughter got constipated. I gave her a whole stage one tub of prunes and she didn't get the runs, but she was quite gassy and uncomfortable after wards. I've given her prunes since, but about half of the portion I gave her previously and she was fine.
As far as the mangos and the apricots go, i don't see anything wrong with that. I can see the mango maybe causing mild constipation because of the consistency, but the apricots should be fine. As with any new food, i would just give your baby a small portion, and wait to see is he/she has a reaction. I envy you for having the time you make your own food. Do you use a Cuisinart or a regular blender? I'm curious.
Reply:i give my baby mango and he dose just fine just do one thing new at a time for at least 3 days to make sure your baby doesn't have a allergic reaction.
Reply:I've seen recipes for all 3 of those on www.wholesomebabyfood.com. My daughter is too young for solids, though, so I haven't tried them yet.
Mangoes are supposed to be really healthy as they are full of fiber, and since they're so sweet baby will probably really like them!
Reply:Make sure he isn't allergic first. Then try introducing them slowly to him.
Reply:ask your doctor, or look at parenting or baby magazine.
